- Summary
During his Ph.D. studies at the University of Chile, an academic degree he obtained in 2014, Professor Ramírez-Sarmiento joined the laboratory of Elizabeth A. Komives at the University of California San Diego, where he became interested in the study of protein folding and protein-protein interactions.
His research focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanism that allows folded structure changes in "metamorphic proteins", one of the most representative examples of how protein folding can regulate cellular function, through a combination of various computational and experimental strategies.
Professor Ramírez-Sarmiento also focuses on the discovery and engineering of enzymes as new biocatalysts for the degradation of synthetic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, a serious environmental threat. More information here
